CTIA Statement on the FCC’s March Open Meeting

After the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) March Open Meeting, I said:

“CTIA applauds the Commission for taking action today on two key spectrum items that will expand the availability of spectrum for licensed and unlicensed use, and bring significant benefits to consumers.

“The AWS-3 Report and Order will set the stage for the auction of 65 megahertz later this year, including the critical pairing of the 1755-80 MHz band with the 2155-80 MHz band. Bringing this spectrum to market will play a key role in meeting demand for mobile broadband services, driving investment and innovation and fulfilling the goals of the National Broadband Plan. Although more work remains to be done to maximize commercial access to this band and make available information about the band to potential bidders, the AWS-3 Report and Order is an important step toward bringing this spectrum to market.

“We also applaud the adoption of the 5 GHz Order, which will make available 100 megahertz of unlicensed spectrum in the 5 GHz UNII-1 band. This band is particularly well suited to unlicensed use, and will drive innovation and connectivity.

“We appreciate the hard work of the Administration, Congress, NTIA and the FCC to bring these critical spectrum bands to market.”
