CTIA Statement on AT&T’s “It Can Wait” Safe Driving Announcement

After AT&T announced its “It Can Wait” safe driving initiative today, I released the following statement:

"Texting while driving is an extremely dangerous activity that puts drivers, passengers and pedestrians at unnecessary and avoidable risk. The wireless industry is proud to continue its collective efforts to promote safe driving, which CTIA initiated more than 15 years ago. In addition, individual company initiatives, such as AT&T’s ‘It Can Wait’ campaign, are vital and effective components to the industry’s mission of creating a safer driving environment. CTIA and our member companies take the responsibility of educating the general public about the very real dangers of distracted driving very seriously and we remain dedicated to the initiative.”

Any effort to curb texting while driving is very helpful and can only save lives and property. I personally witnessed a text induced accident. The texting driver passed me and I thought "she is going to hit someone". She did. Fortunately it was only a fender bender.
