Today, I issued the following statement in response to the release of NTIA’s Online Safety and Technology Working Group Report which evaluated industry efforts and made recommendations to promote online safety for children.
“With more than 630 devices, 240,000 apps and 286 million subscriber connections, CTIA and the wireless industry believe that providing and educating parents and children about online safety tools will empower them to be responsible wireless users in a diverse and expanding wireless ecosystem. From best practices to educational campaigns, we have made keeping kids safe in mobile environments a priority for our industry for many years.
“We were honored to be a part of this diverse and knowledgeable working group which recognized and reaffirmed the many online safety tools and educational initiatives that the wireless industry currently provides.
“CTIA will continue to inform parents, educators, policymakers and children about responsible wireless use through industry initiatives such as the “Be Smart. Be Fair, Be Safe: Wireless Responsible Use” campaign. Launched in March 2010 with The Wireless Foundation, the cornerstone of the program is its website which provides adults with information and tools, including lesson plans for middle and high school educators, to help kids understand and act in a responsible manner when using their wireless devices.”
