Motorola: Environmental Update

We continue to focus on “green” initiatives this month, and today we’re featuring an update from our member, Motorola. 

Motorola is known around the world for innovation in communications and is focused on advancing the way the world connects. From broadband communications infrastructure, enterprise mobility and public safety solutions to high-definition video and mobile devices, Motorola is leading the next wave of innovations that enable people, enterprises and governments to be more connected and more mobile.

Motorola is working to be part of the solution to climate change and to reduce the environmental footprint of its products, operations and supply chain. The company approaches this by making its facilities more energy efficient, improving the environmental profile of its products and enabling its customers to be greener when using its products.

  • Working to minimize the environmental impact of its operations, Motorola has reduced its carbon footprint by 20 percent since 2005. In 2009, about 15 percent of Motorola’s global electricity came from renewable resources. Its goal is to increase its global purchase of electricity from renewable sources to 20 percent by 2010 and 30 percent by 2020. Motorola has already made a commitment to buy renewable energy credits to achieve its 2010 goal.
  • Motorola launched two environmentally conscious mobile phones in 2009 to help consumers reduce their eco-footprints. The world’s first CarbonFree®-certified mobile phone, the MOTO™W233 Renew, and the MOTOCUBO A45 Eco, are both made from recycled post-consumer plastic water-cooler bottles and can be recycled at end-of-life.
  • The company has also introduced the first CarbonFree®-certified universal mobile phone chargers that are energy efficient, enabling consumers to recharge their mobile phones with less impact on the environment. Smarter software also has been embedded in its mobile phones to alert the user when it’s time to unplug the charger so precious energy is not wasted in standby mode.
  • Motorola’s next-generation cable QIP set-tops consume less power, are half the size of their predecessors and achieve an estimated 12 - 20 percent carbon footprint reduction across the product lifecycle compared to previous models. Also, its SURFboard® cable modems and Netopia® gateways are equipped with energy-saving features including ENERGY STAR power supplies.
  • Many of Motorola’s customers have discovered cost savings with green technology that also enables them to reduce their environmental impact. For example, Motorola technologies streamline supply chains with radio frequency identification, avoid wasted journeys with integrated global positioning systems and can enable more secure and coordinated smart grids.
  • Motorola offers take-back programs in 70 countries globally, covering more than 90 percent of its global mobile phone unit sales. 
  • In November 2009, Motorola launched a take-back recycling program for U.S.-based enterprise customers including portable, mobile and infrastructure equipment. This program supports Motorola’s goal of making recycling simple for customers and consumers.
  • Motorola is currently partnering with U.S. electric utilities to provide the wireless communications infrastructure to create a smarter energy grid. The company is contributing to the smart grid solution with secure broadband data communications for better management of the world’s energy production, distribution and consumption.
